Semen Collection For Your Pet | Townsend Vet Albury
Breeding plans can move quickly, especially when timing matters or a stallion is travelling. At Townsend Vet Albury, we provide semen collection services to support natural breeding management, artificial insemination programs, and semen evaluation when fertility is a concern.
If you’re based in Albury or bringing a stallion in from elsewhere, we’ll talk you through what’s involved, how we prepare the stallion, and what happens to the semen after collection.

Semen Collection FAQs
Just a few common questions about Semen Collection. If there is something else you need to know just ask in the Contact Us form below!
Do you need a mare on site for collection?
Not always. Many stallions can collect using a phantom, and some programs use a mare in season depending on the stallion’s experience and behaviour. We’ll plan this with welfare and safety in mind.
How long can chilled semen be used for?
Chilled semen is typically used within a short window, and success depends on semen quality, handling, and mare timing. We’ll talk through realistic expectations and the best schedule for insemination.
Can semen be frozen for later use?
Yes, in many cases. Freezing suitability depends on how the semen performs during processing and after thaw. If freezing is your goal, we’ll discuss collection timing, number of collections needed, and storage arrangements.
What if semen results aren’t ideal?
We may recommend repeating the sample, adjusting collection frequency, reviewing health and workload, or doing a more detailed reproductive work-up. Sometimes a small change in management or timing makes a meaningful difference.
