Lameness Exams FAQs

Just a few common questions about Lameness Exams. If there is something else you need to know just ask in the Contact Us form below!

  • Should I give pain relief before the appointment?

If your horse is comfortable enough to travel, it’s often best not to give anti-inflammatories right before the exam, because they can mask pain and make localisation harder. If your horse is very sore, call us first so we can advise what’s safest.

  • How long does a lameness exam take?

A basic assessment may fit within a standard consult, but a full work-up with nerve blocks and imaging usually takes longer. If you can, mention the history when booking so Townsend Vet Albury can schedule appropriately.

  • Does the exam hurt my horse?

Most of the exam is observation and gentle palpation. Some steps can be uncomfortable if a structure is inflamed, but we keep handling controlled and stop if anything is unsafe or overly painful.

  • Will you need X-rays or ultrasound straight away?

Not always. If the lameness localises clearly, we may recommend imaging early. If localisation is uncertain, it can be better to work stepwise so imaging is targeted and more likely to answer the question.
