Acupuncture FAQs

Just a few common questions about Acupuncture. If there is something else you need to know just ask in the Contact Us form below!

  • My dog is hyperactive. Will he sit still for 20 minutes?

You would be surprised! While the first few minutes might involve some wiggling, the release of endorphins that occurs once the needles are in usually has a profound calming effect.

  • How soon will I see results?

Acupuncture has a cumulative effect. While some owners notice a difference in their pet’s energy levels after the very first session, it usually takes three to four treatments to see significant improvement in mobility.

  • With Acupuncture can I stop their pain medication?

We generally advise against stopping medication immediately. Our goal at Townsend Vet Albury is often to reduce the reliance on pills to spare the liver and kidneys, but this should be done gradually. As the acupuncture builds up and the pain decreases, we can work with you to taper down their oral medication safely.

  • Is Acupuncture safe for cats?

Absolutely. While cats are famously opinionated, many of them tolerate acupuncture very well, especially older cats with arthritis who are craving relief. We let them sit where they are comfortable—often in their carrier base or on a soft towel—and use fewer needles to keep the session short and sweet.
